You’ve mastered the fundamentals of data literacy, now it’s time to turn those insights into powerful, interactive dashboards. Our Power BI course builds on the concepts you’ve learned and equips you with practical skills to visualise, analyse, and share data with confidence.

This hands-on course is perfect for professionals who want to:

  • Use advanced features like DAX and Copilot to accelerate insights.

Technical requirements: We will supply laptops with the necessary licenses.

Course Structure

This course is split over 7 modules:

    Get started with Power BI Desktop
  • Overview of Power BI and its components
  • Tour of the Power BI Desktop Interface
  • Creating a new Power BI project
  • Data Sources and Transformation
  •  
    Connecting to various data sources (E.g. Excel, CSV, etc..)

  • Loading data into Power BI Desktop
  • Basic Data transformations using Query Editor
  • Removing unnecessary columns and rows
  • Renaming columns and tables
  • Adding calculated columns
  •  
    Understanding the importance of data modeling

  • Creating relationships between tables
  • Configuring cross-filtering and cross-highlighting behaviour
  • Establishing relationship cardinality (one-to-one, one-to-many)
  • Interactive Data Visualisations
  •  
    Introduction to Power BI visuals and the different types of visualisations

  • Drag and Drop visual creation
  • Formatting and customising visuals
  • Creating hierarchies within interactive reports with drill-through actions
  • Adding slicers and filters for data exploration
  • Hands-on Exercise: Designing interactive visualisation for a sample dataset
  • Analysing Data with DAX calculations
  •  
    Introduction to DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) formulas

  • Creating measures and calculated columns with DAX
  • Using DAX functions for calculations and aggregations
  • Hands-on Exercise: Using DAX create a new measure and incorporate the measure into a visual
  • Publishing and Sharing of Power BI Content

  • Creation of roles within the Workspace

Should Attend

The course is ideal for anyone who has a good knowledge of Excel and would like to learn Power BI.

Prerequisites

  • Basic computer skills – Ability to navigate common office applications
  • Familiarity with Excel – Understanding of basic formulas and data tables will help.
  • Completion of the Data Literacy course (recommended) – Knowledge of data types, quality, and basic modelling concepts.
  • Comfort with numbers – No advanced maths required, but ability to interpret figures is useful.
  • Interest in data-driven decision-making – A willingness to explore and apply insights.

Assessment

There is no final assessment. Participants will be guided during the course. At the end of the course, attendees will receive a Certificate of Attendance..
